Housing

Majority of the Alabama Panhellenic Association (APA) sororities at Alabama are housed in on-campus, freestanding houses located on University property.   Houses sleep anywhere from 16 to 70 women and most facilities have a live-in house director, who manages the day-to-day functions for the house

Since 2005, UA has played an instrumental role in assisting Greek organizations with the construction of 19 new housing facilities and the renovation of 12 existing facilities that include life safety features. In accordance with the campus master plan, four new sorority houses were constructed adjacent to the current sorority row in what is now the Barnwell parking lot. Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Delta Delta Delta and Delta Gamma are currently residing in new sorority facilities on Magnolia Drive. In 2012, the UA Board of Trustees passed an Amendment to the Campus Master Plan to accommodate the Sorority Expansion Master Plan, allowing all Panhellenic sororities the option to add additional space to their existing houses or raze their the existing structures and build new. This initiative is being accomplished in three phases.

Sorority Expansion Master Plan:

Phase I consists of the Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Chi Omega, and Chi Omega projects.  Construction on these projects is either currently under way or will begin soon, and the estimated completion date is Fall 2014.

Phase II consists of the Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Phi Mu projects, and these projects are in the planning stages.  Construction on these projects will begin upon completion of the Phase I projects.  The preliminary estimated completion date for these projects is no later than Fall 2016.

Phase III will consist of Alpha Omicron Pi, Delta Zeta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Pi Beta Phi, and Zeta Tau Alpha. The commencement of these projects is dependent on the completion of Phase I and II.

Financial Requirements:

Sorority members pay dues each semester. Many groups use Greek Resource Services (GRS) or another financial management company, which offers online access and monthly payment plans. It is important to remember that sorority membership is the most expensive during the first semester due to one-time new member fees (i.e. pledging, initiation, badge or pin fee, etc.) and we suggest that you anticipate the total fees using the higher projections provided below. Women participating in recruitment will need to reference the Living Out of the Sorority House fees and New Member Fees. Please note that the semester fees vary by sorority and depend on housing arrangements.

Each chapter has a financial requirement, which should be taken into consideration before pledging a sorority. Financial requirements may include membership dues, house fees and room and board if you live in the facility. It is important to note that membership fees vary by sorority.

Greek 55 Meal Plan:

If you are a first-year student at UA, you were automatically assigned an All Access meal plan; however, if at the end of sorority recruitment, you pledge a sorority with an in-house kitchen, which requires a meal plan purchase within the organization, your meal plan will be automatically reduced to the Greek 55 meal plan once UA Dining Services receives the new member bid list from the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life after Bid Day. Please note however that any meal swipes used prior to the downgrade to the Greek 55 will be subtracted from the original 55 swipes. Furthermore, any credit for the difference between the All Access meal plan and the Greek 55 meal plan will be applied to any outstanding balance due on the student account. For a list of available dining locations and hours prior to August 9th, please click here http://fawp.ua.edu/bamadining/hours-operation/.  For more information regarding Meals Plan Terms and Conditions for the 2015-2016 academic year, including the Greek 55 meal plan, please click here.

First-year students who join a Greek organization with an in-house kitchen, which requires a meal plan purchase within the organization, will automatically have their meal plan reduced to the Greek 55 meal plan ($522) when UA Dining Services receives pledge lists from the office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

  • Greek Organizations are responsible for sending pledge lists to the office of Fraternity and Sorority Life by the first business day in September for Sororities and before the first Monday in October for Fraternities. Pledge list are generally processed for meal plan downgrades within one week. Students are responsible for reviewing their student account to verify downgrades.
  • First-year students who join a Greek organization with an in-house kitchen, which requires a meal plan purchase within the organization, will automatically have their meal plan reduced to the Greek 55 meal plan when UA Dining Services receives pledge lists from the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. However, students may upgrade to a standard meal plan.
  • If you do not accept your bid or depledge from the organization, your First Year Experience/All Access meal plan will be reinstated.

How will Bama Dining credit the original All Access plan to your account:

  • If you are a first-year student at UA, you were automatically assigned an All Access meal plan. The All Access meal plan cost is $1,715 per semester. When Dining Services receives the sorority bid list (provided by the office of Fraternity and Sorority Life), all new first-year students with an active All Access meal plan are downgraded to the Greek 55 automatically ($522). Any meal swipes used prior to the downgrade will be subtracted from the original 55 swipes.
  • Each student on the bid list will receive a credit for the All Access meal plan (-$1,715) on their student account. This will result in a net charge on the student account of $0.00 for the All Access meal plan. The Greek 55 meal plan charge will be applied to the student account in the amount of $520.
  • The credit for the difference between the All Access meal plan and the Greek 55 meal plan will be applied to any outstanding balance due on the student account. If the student has no outstanding balance, the credit will be applied to the credit card that was last used on the student account up to the amount previously charged. If a credit card was not used to pay on the student account, a check or direct deposit payment will be processed.
  • Please check your student account to verify the status of your account.
